I'd like to suggest a new type of layer overlay that will clip the selected layer (also a group or any other object from the layer list) to the alpha channel of the parent (and remove anything that goes beyond the borders of the alpha channel). Even considering that it is a non-standard property, which then causes problems in vector export (it must be rasterized).
