I have a png image and have tried to insert a pattern into it.

But when I drag the pattern slightly below the png image to insert it, as demonstrated in a video I saw with a bell image from assets and a photo, it will not work. I upgraded to 1.8.3 hoping this problem would be resolved but it still does not insert it. In the previous verson of Affinity Designer it was always a hit and miss with other images I tried. Getting tired of attempting to make this work. When I drag the pattern into the unicorn it creates a mask which not what I want.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

You’re dealing with raster images not vector objects. To nest the pattern inside the unicorn shape you will need to convert the unicorn to a vector object, unfortunately affinity doesn’t do tracing so a third party app or  service is required such as Inkscape or https://www.vectorizer.io/

Hi @BrightBold,

Apologies for the delayed response!

This can be achieved in Designer by Inverting the unicorn layer, then rasterise this to mask. Now clip the mask to your pattern layer - please see my below screen recording showing this :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!
