There is a known issue that RGB 0,0,0 (or Greyscale 0) is considered a CMYK Rich Black so the K value isn't actually 100% (its actually 88%). Therefore when you erase you're actually leaving behind that remaining 12% (Because the mask is using the K channel's 0-100 scale for transparency). If you switch the Colour Panel to view CMYK sliders and use K set to 100% you will be able to mask the remainder. This is something we're aware of and is with development to be fixed.
