Merging / Adding Objects

I have two objects that I want to "add" together to create one vector object. I have done this many times before but now I am getting poor results. Both layers are Curves. They are not text layers or shape layers.

Don’t ask me why, but ‘Add’ works correctly for me (in AD on iPad, if that matters) after I move the border layer above the lettering curves layer.

Strange. That works on my end too. Thanks.

It also works if you keep the lettering curves layer above the border layer and alt/opt click to add them (making a compound object).

Weird.

Same for me using AD for Macs.
