Hold down alt/option while dragging selection to copy

extra steps may not be acceptable

Speaking of "extra steps"…
What I have always found annoying is that if you open an image in Photoshop (CS5.1 being the last version I'm still using), it's a locked background layer.
So to cut & move a marquee selection to create a transparent alpha "hole", you must:

  1. select the command to convert a background layer to a regular layer with alpha capability (using a keyboard shortcut, hence I'm giving it just one step)
  2. confirm the modal dialog window that appears
  3. make a marquee
  4. cmd-drag

In APh:

  1. make a marquee
  2. cmd-drag

But perhaps it's just me. What do I know… :D

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

I think you might be asking for the ‘wrong’ functionality.

Firstly, it's not just me, but the OP and others on this thread. I've tried to illustrate what they're asking for (and I'm still not sure I've done them any favours by trying to do so).

I chose to illustrate with a really simple version of the 'exercise' as an example, in order the demonstrate the 'problem' of umpteen actions instead of just a few. The exercise I chose to illustrate it could possibly be automatically in-filled. I appreciate your suggestion @GarryP

Mostly, though, these exercises involve something a bit more.... a lot of selecting and drag copying different parts, to different positions.

Words are crude implements, difficult to get perfect, easy to get tied in knots with, and often - usually - misunderstood, which is why 'tolarence' is the best word of all.

The word "professional" fits us all - amateur, semi-pro, beginner, advanced, middle, beyond it all, and on....., because professionals are tolerant.

Doesn't double-clicking on the layer turn it to an editable one?

I don't think I should be here, but I am.

Ditched Adobe completely, but I'm having some bumps on the road trying to adapt to AP

I'm having the same problem, I'm trying to simply duplicate a selection, with a simple Cmb+Option. That's all I want to do. I don't want to duplicate a layer then move then merge it down, and the suggestion of that process is as ridiculous as printing my layers, cutting them with my scissors, rearrange them and take a photo to return to Affinity Photo.

PLEASE, it's a simple request that won't affect any kind of functionality.
