Welcome to the Affinity forums!

One way is to use the pressure curve of a stroke. Even if you do not use a pressure sensitive input device, you can simulate pressure by editing the pressure curve - see the app Help or the online version: https://affinity.help/designer/English.lproj/pages/Painting/pressure.html

By the way, the Title field when starting a new topic in the forum is for indicating the topic of your post, such as "How do I draw tapered lines?".

An easy way to do this if you want to keep your spines and bristles pure vector is to use the pen tool:

1) Click once to lay down a sharp node
2) Click to lay down a second sharp node
3) Click back on the first node
4) Switch to the node tool and pull on the curve segments, handles, and nodes to adjust to your liking.
