I am exporting templates in APhoto, updating a template I purchased as part of the Glitch Effects package by Retro Supply, & except for on one occasion, it saves as an ADesigner template file. Only one time did the file save as an APhoto template file, & I don't know why.

Why is this & will it cause issues?

I have the trial version of ADesigner installed, but have not used it for a long time. I have a payed verison of APhoto for Win 7.

Template files (.aftemplate) are not specific to any one Affinity application; they can be opened by any of the applications.

So I'm not sure what you mean by "ADesigner template" and "APhoto template".

But, no, there's nothing different between the trial and retail versions.

Perhaps you're just seeing Windows use the icon for the last program you installed that can handle that kind of file?

Thanks for your reply walt.farrell.

I have discovered that although Retro Supply describe their pre-made templates thus, they are actually .afphoto files & not .aftemplate files.

As far as functionality is concerned, it doesn't seem to matter whether I save using 'Export As Template' or 'Save As', with regards to the templates opening & performing in APhoto as expected. The file sizes between the two types are also are equal. So what is the essential difference between these two save types? Would you advise continuing to update the pre-made .afphoto 'template' files native to the Retro Supply folder or instead create new .aftemplate files of the ADesigner type?

These are the very first templates I've created & saved. I have only opened ADesigner perhaps a couple of times, having decided that as a photographer desiring to manipulate photographic images, APhoto is most useful to me.

When I end my ADesigner trial & decide that I don't need to purchase the software I will remove it from my hd. Will the ADesigner template files still work with APhoto?

Many thanks for your time.

As I said, .aftemplate files will work in any of the Affinity applications. That's also true, though, of .afphoto, .afdesign and .afpub files. They are all identical except for the file extension, and can be opened by any of the applications.

However, there are some functions that differ between the applications. For example, all 3 applications support Frame Text, and have Text Frames. But only Publisher provides controls to set the stroke and fill of the Frame, rather than the stroke and fill of the text contained in the Frame.

Thanks for the info Walt. I guess then that's it's just an odd anomaly that APhoto decides to save the template extension with an ADesigner icon. From now on if I need to update the templates I will simply Save them rather than Exporting them.

It's Windows or MacOS providing the icon, not the application.
