Why does publisher darken part of my photos when I export PDFs?

Hi,

Difficult to understand without one of the linked images that end up as 2 different images (but one shorter, only a quarter of the one below), when exported to PDF. (You can see this opening the PDF in APub.)

Did you linked Afphoto files? I suppose the problem come from there, it shouldn't occur when linking an exported PNG of JPG.

Subsidiary question: it seems your book will be print as what we call "black book" (no colours, only black text and grey levels for images), why didn't you work from the start in levels of greys, exporting or saving your images as such, and using such profile in APub?
Working like this from the start will help you getting better contrasts in your images and in your layout, since you'll see from the start how it'll be once finished.
For now, there's a yellow cast on your images, and it would be better without.

If you don't need to print it, and only want to have a final PDF, I would suggest using some adjustement layer to give a sepia tone to your images. Also, it's better to have them at the top or the bottom of your pages than dividing the text in the middle, and since left align text is difficult to read since unregular line ending is tiring for the eyes, long text are usually justified.

@Wosven Damn! I wish I knew that from the start. Can you tell me how I would go about doing that if I was starting from the beginning? And is there any way to go through and change everything over?

I don't have time this evening or tomorrow to give an example file, but try doing a copy of your file,  and go in the document's preferences > colours > assign a grey profile instead of RGB or CMYK one.

On your images, if they don't convert automatically to grey, use "K only" button on the contextual bar, and adjust contrasts if they are too grey or light.

While exporting to PDF, check the profile and the option "convert colours" in the "more" options.
