Morne Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 Hi Guys 1.8 finally has smart objects (embedded objects) and it's come a long way. As a next step, can we make this live links please? Meaning if the original file changed outside of Affinity Photo, we will have an option to manually update it in the layers, or just auto update all layers from external sources. Quote
walt.farrell Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 Your topic title refers to "Linked Embedded objects". A file is either Linked (in which case you should get what you want, live updates) or it is Embedded (in which case you don't). But "Linked Embedded" doesn't make sense. They are either one or the other, not both. Morne Posted June 10, 2020 Author Posted June 10, 2020 Walt, could you point me to a link for linked files then please so I can read up on it please. I havent been around here in a while, and when I was, this wasnt possible. Also, makes perfect sense to me (from a PS terminology point of view). In PS you can have linked smart objects. Quote

And, as far as I know, you can do that in Publisher, too. But, my apologies for some incomplete thinking. Designer and Photo do not fully support Linked objects; only embedded. You would need to use Publisher to setup the document with the "Prefer Linked" attribute when you create it, then open it in Photo. At that point, Photo would Link the smart object, rather than embedding. And then, when you Open the document again, Photo would detect that the object had been changed externally, and offer you the option to update it. You will find further information about Linked files in the Publisher tutorials or Help. Morne Posted June 10, 2020 Author Posted June 10, 2020 Thanks Walt I was hoping I could do this directly in Photo, without needing Publisher, therefore tagging it as a feature request Quote
