inspiringdesign Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 Hello, My client and I have been working on a packaging design for over a year and the design is almost ready to go to press. There are 2 sizes of the same package designed in Affinity Publisher with assets created/edited in Designer and Photo. The two packages are essentially 2 documents with 2 rectangle pages each (No die-line) 13" x 15" + 1/8" bleed x 2 pages (Front and back) 10" x 12" + 1/8 bleed x 2 pages (Front and back) The packages are to be printed on a shrink-wrap for a frozen pizza crust. I just learned that the printing costs for my client are upwards of $20,000. This is huge and I have to get the output correct. I just received the specifications from the printer and they are attached. However, I will copy the important specs below. My question is, am I able to provide what the printer is looking for based on the capabilities of Affinity Publisher vs. the printer's requirements? If so, I would really appreciate some guidance to create the output PDF files. I literally CANNOT afford to get this wrong as it will be the end of me! Quote PRINTERS SPECIFICATIONS: ACCEPTABLE FILE FORMATS ( I have omitted the preferred file formats of Adobe Illustrator CC and Adobe Photoshop CS5, but the full document is attached) Adobe Acrobat files are accepted but the file must be saved with layers and as Press Ready. We also accept normalized pdfs with line screens and angles assigned All Files Of This Type will be subject to additional art charges if deemed to be not acceptable. Graphic Savvy will not be responsible for misinterpreted file information from Adobe Acrobat to Adobe Illustrator CC LAYER CONSTRUCTION FOR ILLUSTRATOR FILES 1) DIELINE (coloured 100% CYAN Spot Colour) 2) UPC 3) NUTRIFACTS 4) ART 5) IMAGE (if applicable) 5) WHITE PLATE 6) SUBSTRATE (coloured 20% of Dieline colour) • Maximum 8 colours (including white) • Dieline can be supplied upon request • Minimum Size Barcode: 80% running in press direction • Outline all Fonts • Document Colour Mode: CMYK • Document Raster Effect Setting : 300 DPI • File must not be saved / sent with embedded images, supply hi res images separately • Remove Guides from files • SWATCHES: Remove all unused, duplicate colours Please help. Guidance is appreciated. This being a $20 K print job I'm quite stressed about this. If someone is an expert in this and is able to help me, I can even provide the art files and am willing to pay for professional help. Thank you! inspiringdesign Posted June 9, 2020 Author Posted June 9, 2020 hi @BofG, Thank you for your non-legal advice LOL. Yes, I am being upfront with the printer, I've let them know I am not using Illustrator and will "expect" that they inspect the file before they do anything. Also, you reminded me about digital proofs, I will require a proof be sent to the client and will also state in the sign-off form that the client is responsible for any problems arising from the printing as I am not going to be seeing the proof, but he is. I need to deflect all responsibility to the client here and get him to sign off on it. Thanks for your advice. Much appreciated. Quote
