It’s an issue with affinity. There is no currently no setting in the ui to turn off text background colour on imported text. 
Fortunately there is a workaround.
Draw a new text box, type a letter, select the letter and tap Edit/Copy. Then select the text box with coloured background and tap Edit/Paste Style. This will replace the coloured background with default clear background from your copied text block.

Yesterday I wasted many hours trying to solve this, I can't believe they haven't implemented something so basic, if it's on the desktop version.

Yes, at times it’s hard to understand where their priorities lay. There’s even a space in the text menu area where an icon would naturally fit for this feature to be applied. 🙁
