Tibor Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I have an .AI version 8 file. Nothing fancy. Opening it in designer shows no content at all. In illustrator however you can see that there is content with no fill and outline on the page. Somehow these shapes are totally ignored by Designer. icons-sprite-export.ai Quote
walt.farrell Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. The Affinity applications can only handle .ai files that are saved in compatibility mode, which includes a PDF version of the file. I don't think your .ai file was saved with that option. Tibor Posted June 8, 2020 Author Posted June 8, 2020 Oh, I was not aware about this drawback. Basically what this means for me is that my legacy AI files cannot be opened or imported. Thanks for your quick reply. Quote

You can try some online converters. Or install the latest Illustrator tryout. wonderings Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I use this website when I need to convert something from Corel www.zamzar.com I tried the OP file and tried converting to PDF first with no luck. It gave an error. I tried again and converted to SVG and got the attached file. icons-sprite-export.svg Quote
Tibor Posted June 8, 2020 Author Posted June 8, 2020 Thank you all very much, for helping. You are very kind for making the conversion for me. I just did not unerstand why the imported page was empty, and thought it is a bug. Quote
wonderings Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Happy to help! There is no perfect conversion. Even if you had saved the .ai file from the latest version of Illustrator you can still run into things. I treat converting and importing into different software then it was originally made a a stepping stone in getting the file to a state where it is ready for production. It will never be perfect, you will always have to double check things so always use at your own risk and always double check everything. Quote
