Designer - Layer Jumps to Front when moved...

Recommended Posts

Affinity Designer is great BUT I want to batter my head against a wall... The forum says it should not do this, unless you have stuff from outside the art board that you are dragging onto the art board.

BUT IT IS DOING IT!  It doesn't matter what or where I try to move something it is doing it. How do I stop this? It makes it impossible to use this software. No matter what I do, every time I move something it moves to the front. I am on Mac,,,, and I can't stop it... I am desperate for help. ...

I started this thread because the answer is NOT there.... and I don't know if you monitor such old posts....
So... to be clear, Nothing is off the art board. I even created a whole lot new items and they did it too..

Of course, editing/adding an old thread will restore it so that it reaches the top of the stack just like a completely newly created thread.

and telling me off, is not helping.

Creating many threads with exactly the same problem, but not the other way around.

The solution is’nt there, it’s by design...

As Chris_K replied in the original post.

Edit: If I had this problem, I would enlarge the Artboard so that I could place objects outside the work area on it.
Then I would mark the work area with a frame, or with the Margins. Then I can move objects to the work area within one Artboard.

Thank you, that is definitely more helpful, however I have tried that... I have enlarged the art board to a ridiculous size, and it still keeps happening.... even with new object created on the actual art board with no overlap. It is happening with every item in the layers panel. It feels like once you have moved one item off the art board, you will never be able to get anything to stay in order ever again.

Once you enlarged the artboard, did you put the object back into the correct place in the Z order, and then subsequently moving it on that artboard it does not stay put in the Z order, is that your experience? can you make and upload a short video of that?

Happens for me too. See video.

I think what you are seeing is "by design," in that if you move something completely off an artboard it is removed from (no longer a child of) that artboard.

My fault, wasn't reading the first post not carefully enough. But wouldn't it be nice - perhaps with some modifier key - to move the element from outside of the artboard into the layers panel at the correct position? Cutting and pasting will do, so no problem on my side.

Can't you just drag it to wherever you want in the Layers panel?

No, the element moves under the panel or if the panel is on my second screen the work area scrolls sideways.

I am not sure what you mean about moving 'under' the panel but I was asking about moving the object on the Layers panel itself.

Maybe this works on Mac? But not under Windows ... at least for me.

What I am asking about is dragging the layer on the Layers panel, not in the workspace window.
