Why does Affinity Photo take soo long to load?

Recommended Posts

I have two, usually only meant for project related development purposes, but tested APh & ADe v.1.9.3 apps on (1) in order to see how they behave at all then.

  1.  MacBook Pro 15", 2,6 GHz Quad‑Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Intel GPU.  - (Catalina)
  2.  MacBook Pro 15", 2,6 GHz 6‑Core Intel Core i7, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, Radeon Pro & Intel GPU. - (yet with Catalina, but maybe soon updated to BigSur)

I don't have much fonts on these Macs installed, just what the plain OS carries with it and one or two additional corporate specific ones.

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

Hmmm. Not that different from my iMac, certainly not enough to explain the large differences in launch times.

All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7
Affinity Photo
1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7

I don't really worry about the time it takes to load the program, but what makes me wonder is why the program takes so long to load an image.

Simple JPEG image 1,500x724 pixels.  In the same machine running Photoshop elements, the image loads in about 1 second.  The same image in Affinity Photo takes 7 seconds.

I should clarify, the image itself loads very fast i.e. in 1 second or less, but something obviously is happening after it loads as the cursor is very non-responsive and the histograms in the right window does not show up until 7 seconds at which time the cursor is working normally.

Can someone tell me why?  and more importantly what I can change to make it load faster?
