Publisher: Applying Text styles via Find and Replace results in overrides

Recommended Posts

I am using Find and Replace to apply Paragraph text styles.

When I do this, the applied text styles have extra overriden attributes added to them. Because my document has hundreds of pages, I don’t want to click on each one and cancel the overrides.

How can I apply the text styles via Find and Replace without having these overriden attributes added to them?

Are you applying the style (Normal) to text with (say) italic on some words and you want the italic removed after application (Normal)?

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.0 | Affinity Photo 2.4.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Original text: Helvetica 18pt (no italics or bold).

I am applying a style called Heading. After doing Find and Replace, Heading gets applied. But then values like leading, space after are added as overrides instead of using the values in Heading.

Did the original text have those attributes applied before you did the Replace?

Hi,

Perhaps the problem come with the Header style. Which style in on your text? Does it come from the same parent-style (like Base) than the one for Header?

Did you import your text, apply "no style" for paragraph and character styles, and apply on this your Body text style (or another one), before searching and replacing with Header?

The text was imported, but it has no style applied to it.

The header style I am applying is a base style.

If your Header style don't have specific choices about colours, normal (=/= italic), size, etc. and the underlaying text use colours, italic, etc., the style won't override them.

But your text shouldn't have local formatting. For this, select all your text, cut it, and paste it again without formatting (Menu Edit).

Another way to do this: to have a basic text  style with specific like font Arial, font normal, 9 pts, black, leading 12 pts, and set all your text in this simple style, before applying other styles. This way, searching for text using this style, you'll know which paragraphes you didn't apply styles to (but this text shouldn't have overrides too).

What I call a "base style" is more a Paragraph style group" that will be parent of other styles, and containing the information about the font, for example. Like the Base_title in this file. You can easily modify the font of this group style, and all children that don't override this font for another, will use the new font too.

My text doesn't have any local formatting. It's just Helvetica 18pt (no italics or bold).

Is this something Affinity has changed? In the past, I could use Find and Replace to apply styles and I wouldn't get any overrides.

Can you provide a sample? It's difficult to find the solution  without looking at a file.

Unfortunately, I can't provide a sample as it has work that I am not allowed to share. However, I tried making a 'redacted sample' that has only one line of text. When I did this, the Find and Replace worked properly, so I am guessing there must be something in the file that is creating the problem. I noticed that Affinity has an option called "reapply text styles" which can be used to clear overrides. So I set a keyboard shortcut to that command and then used Keyboard Maestro to go through all the text and clear the overrides. I guess this a screwy bug! If I find a way to reproduce it, I will post it in the bugs sections. Thanks to everyone who helped.
