Extremely Slow Launch Times

Recommended Posts

I picked up Affinity Photo for Windows in the recent sale (the whole suite, actually) as companions to the iPad apps, and have found them to be very slow to open on my PC.

I'm running Windows 10 (1909) and the specs are:

  • Ryzen 1700X
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB Samsung 960 Evo NVMe SSD

I have asked for feedback about this elsewhere, and people are telling me that it's unusual, with Photo launching in "about 12 seconds" from a SATA SSD or "about the same amount of time as Photoshop CC". Well, I don't have CC to compare against—I've been stuck on CS5.1 since I don't want to pay a recurring subscription for software.

But the Affinity apps take so long to open that I'm finding them very inconvenient to use, and have stuck to Photoshop to get work done rather than learning/experimenting with Photo.

Hey kangaroo-bowman,

I'm seeing the following:

Adobe Photoshop CC - 12.5 seconds. I don't have older versions to access.

Affinity Photo 1.8.3 - 4.5 seconds. On my Mac it is half that.

Affinity Photo 1.8.4 beta - 5 seconds. The beta launches slightly slower as we write some info to a log on launch for potential debugging reasons.

So your experience seems rather unusual but it could be down to the following:

  1. Number of fonts installed. We enumerate the list on runup so this could be slowing it down if you have thousands of them.
  2. The number of ICC profiles installed
  3. Custom brushes - if you have a lot of these installed, it can slow the app down
  4. Finally, assets. If you have a ton of assets, these can also slow down the app on launch

@Chris B I would add that loading Additional Dictionaries slows the start substantially.

There are only 230 fonts and 50 ICC profiles on this system. No custom brushes/assets/dictionaries - it's a clean install of the app from the Microsoft Store.

I downloaded a trial of the non-Store version and it seemed to load about 6 seconds faster for some reason; but that's still 30s vs <5s.

It could be the ICC profiles. For comparison, I only have 17. It might be worth copying your folder and taking 30 or so out and see if it improved. I'm not suggesting you do this permanently but it might confirm what is causing the slow load.
