Can't get global colours to work in Designer

Help!  I can't get global colours to work in Designer. I'm using v1.8.3 on a MacBook Pro (Mojave).

I select an object with a colour fill, select Add Global Colour in the Swatches panel, complete the Global Colour window, and click Add.

Nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Your first paragraph is what I did but it still didn't work. So I closed down Designer and reopened it. And it worked!

Not sure why but it seems OK now.
