Bee
Hello I just start playing with Affinity Designer and noticed it lacked a feature I would love to have added (a Symmetry Function- Vertical & Horizontal) such as the one Sketchbook Pro has and Adobe illustrator lacks. Staff Ben Posted September 17, 2014 Staff Share Posted September 17, 2014 Say no more. I already have an idea for a symmetry tool.... Just need to clear off the rest of the feature request list first. Jamchild
Double plus add one for this request. I believe Illustrator doesn't even have a live symmetry mode where you can edit one side of a closed shape and have the other side update simultaneously, this would be a killer feature. This is common in 3D modeling software (including mine, Silo), and seems critical for vector software, I can hardly believe Illustrator doesn't have it. grzessnik
Jamchild, you can achieve symmetry in AI. You can use transform in Appearance panel. Maybe not best solution but works.
Jamchild
That doesn't work on closed shapes in Illustrator, so you can't be sure what it'll look like where the two sides meet.
grzessnik
It works on closed shapes for me (see attachment). But maybe you need something different.
Jamchild
Yeah, I'm talking about something different - imagine, for example, a single circle where modifying a control point on the left half of the circle also modifies the same control point on the right side of the circle, and any control points on the seam operate as a single control point (rather than two control points that are in the same location). retrograde
There are a few 3d features that would port over nicely to AFD... soft selection falloffs (like Blenders scroll wheel controlled proportional editing tool), node selections along a path (select 1 then 2 nodes and up arrow to select in that direction along the path), symmetry (mirroring) workflow or symmetrize feature to select nodes, then mirror to the opposite side maintaining an open or closed shape, view rotate (x and y in this case) especially for pixel persona painting... I'm sure there are more I just can't think of any at the moment... probably should've started a new thread... ;) Hey Jamchild I recognized you from the silo forums, welcome to the AFD forums. ALx
IMHO there's no need for a Symmetry tool if there's a better solution possible. I think Designer should have a live Transform tool like AI: but maybe I'm missing something. Quote —ALx
Jamchild
Illustrator's Transform tool is not a better option (if you included an attachment znak, I can't see it). Let me use Silo to illustrate. Here I have two types of mirroring going on - on the top is what we call "instance mirroring" in Silo, where it creates a second instance of the object and then flips it, and then anything you do to the left side will also be done to the right side. However, as you can see, at the seam between the two sides, it considers them two different objects, so you can't adjust the points there and have it maintain continuity between the sides easily. On the bottom is true symmetry, where it is one continuous object and I can grab a point on either side and it'll update the corresponding point on the other, and importantly it maintains smooth continuity at the joints: Ummm, I can't figure out how to upload/attach an image. I can only do image links, though it appears somehow I can upload images into "My Media" but I can't find how...
Jamchild
Retrograde, good to see you here! It's kind of funny (and instructive) being on the other side as a user requesting features from a graphics software developer :].

Jamchild
Thanks a lot retrograde - here's the image that illustrates what I was referring to above.
retrograde
Blender has a similar thing. You can either simply mirror points in one step or use a mirror modifier which can then by applied should you want to tweak asymmetrically. rui_mac
The same with Cinema 4D. Great for modeling faces and such :-)
ALx
OK I get it. Not really on top of my most desired features but still cool :) Quote —ALx
