Yes, it is a bit tricky to describe. Select the object, make a duplicate and now with the duplicate still selected use the transform panel to change the x and y co-ordinates. With the object still selected duplicate it again and again ad infinitum.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Or, as an alternative to what Old Bruce said above, you can duplicate the object as many times as you want, select all the copies (including the original), and use the Distribution functions in the Alignment pop-up (see attached image).
There may be other methods but we would need more specific information to say for certain.
