(Photo 1.8.3) Layer Group Kills Contained Blend Modes and Adjustments

Recommended Posts

A lot of things work in Affinity Photo like in Photoshop, but not everything. This can be explained by the fact that Affinity Photo is not Photoshop (nor a Photoshop clone). It's a different program with a different approach. I'm sure another method will lead to the same goal 😀

Just tried to reproduce this Photoshop tutorial in Affinity Photo 1.8.3 and discovered that combining a Levels adjustment layer and a Color Fill layer with Color blend mode within a Layer Group kills the effects of the Levels adjustment and the Color blend mode.

The Group will have blend mode Passthrough. Affinity's Passthrough stops behaving like Photoshop's Pass Through when the group contains a mixture of filter/adjustment and non-filter/adjustment, and an Affinity Fill object is not a filter or adjustment. To make Affinity's Passthrough always behave like Photoshop's Pass Through (until Serif decides to make them match), put a pure white Fill object with blend mode Multiply as  the bottom layer inside a Passthrough Group. There is also a compositing bug with Passthrough when a group is masked, but you might not notice that with this example where your mask won't contain much gradation.
