Psd files in Affinity Designer iPad

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I have a problem with Affinity Designer on my Ipad Pro. I’m trying to open PSD files on the app, but the files appear all grayed out. I tried with files saved with photoshop, files saved from the desktop app of Affinity and even with files exported in PSD from the same app in the iPad, but in any case I can’t open it. What can I do? Thank you in advance!

Where did you download them too, try an iCloud files location, some people have had problems with other locations including OnMyiPad and Dropbox etc where the thumbnails don’t show correctly.

Is your App and iPadOS version up to date?

Have you tried moving them to another location or loading them even though the icon does not show.?

Also make sure you change this setting in preferences if you want to open smart object psd files.

Paul hello I am trying to understand what you did ? Have you ever download files from www.ashedesigns.com that’s where I get my .psd files from if I could send you one file and maybe you could check it out and see if it works for you please I’m paying 20 monthly for a subscription for the files. They work great on my desktop but not on my iPad Pro .

When drag and dropping a file to open you need. To be on Project screen. Ie. no file currently open. AP cannot open two files at once. See below method described to open a psd file when it appears greyed out in AP.

M1 IPad Air 10.9/256GB   lpadOS 17.1.1 Apple Pencil (2nd gen).
Affinity Photo 1.10.5 Affinity Design 1.10.5
Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2, Affinity Photo 2 and betas.

Could you attach one of the psd files. Click the 'Click to choose file', tap Browse, navigate to psd and tap to attach to post.

what else do you think it is

As I mentioned earlier, if the files appear greyed out it may be an iOS permissions issue. You may have another app installed that is preventing AP from accessing the psd. If this is a recent issue, have you installed or updated any other apps that access psd files? If so you may need to try deleting them, doing a hard reset and seeing if the problem persists.

When it happened to me I had to uninstall the drawing apps (including AP), perform hard reset to clear ram, then reinstall AP. I have found that if the greyed out files are visible when switching from browse to recent in file viewer, then then can be loaded that way too. I'm just not sure what is required to make them available under the recent view.

Hi! I seem to have the same issue, PSD files grayed out but I also do not have the option of “import psd smart objects where possible” option in the tools, see photo below.
I have IOS 13.4.1 on my IPad Pro and the latest Affinity Designer update 1.8.3.
Deleting Adobe apps is not an option for me right now, I still use Fresco and Draw for work.

Smart objects are only imported by Affinity Photo, I guess because that is where all the tools are to work with mockups etc.

Drag your photo image down to the layer which is titled 'Clip photo here'. When you see the blue line across the layer release the image. This 'clips' your image to a layer. You 'may' need to rasterise your masked image as masks effect layers below. Hard to say without trying first. Try rasterising if the drag and drop clip doesn’t look right.
