As for the destructive effect of the Sponge Brush I want to suggest the following: If there is only one image layer simply duplicate it. If there is a whole set of a layer composition right click on the top layer and select 'Merge Visible'. Either one will create a copy of the image. Now do everything you explained in your tutorial. Even to a more extreme effect. Add a mask to this top layer and invert it. This brings back the original image (or composition). Now you can use a white brush on the mask and paint in the effect as desired. This is not as non descructive as working with 'HSL' and 'Vibrance' adjustment layers but still a good compromise ...
