Steve.Horne
I'm trying to use the paint brush tool with adjustment layers to erase certain portions of a layer. It is working, but the edge of the brush remains hard, regardless of what I set the hardness to. I'm looking for soft edges to blend the layers more smoothly. I know I've done this in the past, but it is not working now. Perhaps I have unknowingly changed another setting somewhere?
walt.farrell
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums. Can you give us a screenshot including the Tools panel and the Context Toolbar while you're trying to paint? Edit: Also, I'd recommend you change your display name to something other than your email address. With the email address exposed that way you're inviting spam. You can go to https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/settings/username/ to change it. Steve.Horne
Thanks for your reply Walt. And for the tip on the display name, which I have now changed. I've tried twice now to upload a screenshot, but it just queues forever and never uploads. Not quite sure what to do. I'll keep trying. Steve.Horne
It looks like the screenshot was finally able to upload. Hope this helps.
walt.farrell
Thanks for the screenshot. I'm not sure what's going on, either, but I'm sure someone else will have the answer for you. Staff Chris B Posted April 20, 2020 Staff Share Posted April 20, 2020 Hey Steve, This is because you are using a Stack Group. Stacks only support hard alpha (on or off)—not partial alpha. walt.farrell 1 Quote How to format a bug report | Learning Resources | List of V2 FAQs | YouTube Tutorials
Steve.Horne
Thank you Chris. I don't know what a Stack Group is. But I'll research it and get this figured out.

Looking at your screenshot, the top item in the Layers panel shows as (Live Stack Group). You would get that in one of two ways that I know of: File > New Stack Selecting multiple layers in the Layers panel, and then Arrange > New Live Stack Help info here, online. Steve.Horne
Thanks for everyone's help. It seems like for every two new things I learn in post processing, I forget how to do 4 other things. And I've been at this a long time now. At any rate, thanks to your comments I've got it working now. Here is a copy of the finished image...
