Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools

Recommended Posts

Lack of basic tools for an extended period undermines the faith of many who bought in to support Affinity Designer. It was my hope that by purchasing Affinity Designer I was helping contribute to a worthy option to AI. I've had to hold back on running more current MAC OS, because my aging copy of CS6 Illustrator still has many basic tools AD does not. Not to mention the time invested in getting up to speed on software that seems lacking. Then there are the hassles of working on a machine with outdated OS and unsupported security issues. If the future bares no fruit in the way of the missing basic tools many users may choose a different set of software & hardware solutions. An old 2007 Mac Pro cheese grater running 10.6, and a late 2012 mini running 10.12 has been quaint, but how long? I would happily purchase a fully equipped version of Affinity Designer 2.0 in the NEAR future. This would allow me to update my OS and let go of AI.

Wow - another addition to the workarounds for Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools - Clip studio paint now supports import and export of vectors and all the mesh distortion stuff works and exports, although you need to perform workarounds on the workaround - plus pressure drawn strokes don't currently translate over - really pleased and maybe there'll be further improvements as the vector engine in CSP is brilliant and very quick and smooth

Current Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools I'm using to plug the gaps:

Illustrator CS5

VectorStyler

LibreOffice  (yes and it does a pretty decent job)

CSP

Inkscape (Frustratingly slow)

Still these are no substitute for even a very basic Transform, Perspective & Warp capability from within Affinity

If at all possible save your souls with a one stop shop solution - all time wasted on workarounds, using several apps and tricks steals tons of time (and joy) that is deducted from creative time and created output. The worst business case I have seen, almost.

image.png.a3f7723e2446530c9828c1415915d9c1.png

For 5 years you got next to nothing (vector) - so why would version 2.0 bring you a miracle - or a proper update. Look at the contour in 1.9 it is just a POC (Proof of concept) gone too far offering no creative tricks. Just more manual work and workarounds ad libitum.

Many years ago I watched a commercial for the Commodore Amiga (I wanted badly): "Dreaming is free. Stop dreaming." It actually toggled a switch in my head, I asked my employer to give me any extra work he could think of for a long period of time. He did. I worked hard, finally could purchase one and enjoyed that wonderful computer and grew with its creative software. Purchased a PC a few years later as well and ran programs on Windows 3 and 3.1 that had features you are still dreaming about and begging for. Almost 25 to 30 years later!

In a weak moment I liberated myself again from dreaming recently. Saving money is good. Wasting precious time in a short life is ... disastrous.

LOL. So you believe it is just about the order of the bricks?

Seriously, apologists. Let Serif do the explaining - you guys always forget (or do not understand) business priorities and (long term) strategy. FX how to keep you in the fold for years.

Another one for MacOS, I recall, which offers a symetrical and free vector distort function is the Amadine app ...

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

They already did. They (probably) have not enough (human) resources. But there was also talk of direct offspring

Well, still due to business decisions behind it all and the priorities their leadership (not the devs, apologists) make as they go - even at this stage. To add insult to injury their marketing oversold the products all they way since before releasing the first versions.

The decision to develop too many products with an extremely small crew in a bunker in Nottingham seemingly without much of a business network and without user experience designers was not forced upon Serif by natural laws or a dictatorship. The challenges Serif mentioned here can be solved or mitigated - if they make the necessary decisions. They stick to what they know and customers are stuck for years and years with the result of their decisions.

What is even more interesting is not what the fanboys and apologists here - a tiny group of amateurs and hobbyists mostly - repeat without end; It is what made others not choosing Affinity. Customers that could make the products grow and mature once inside a non-forum based feedback loop.

But the hardcore forum enthusiasts will never know. Not with their beginner workbooks in their ears and their hands in front of their eyes. And Xara-Inkscape as desperate fallback solutions. Their presence and activity shields Serif from people with ambitions and bigger needs. Without user experience specialists it is also obvious that Serif shields itself. They focus on... marketing.

ACE - looks like a fairly lightweight app aimed at hobbyists - good to see Amadines devs prob consider Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools to be a basic essential 👍

Come-on Santa spread some fairy dust over the next Xmas day beta or get your vector distortion dev elves on nightshift  - feeling optimistic 🎅🎄

Michael,

This thread is about an envelope warping feature. If you search for "Extrude", you'll find other threads pertaining to what you describe.

Those threads are about 3D features. An extrude feature to "make a 3D view", for which Michael is relating to the Isometric Grids feature (2D construction), is not about a 3D modeling feature. Extrude features like in CorelDRAW and other programs are 2D constructs and therefore not ruled out by the Affinity team's responses that Affinity will not have 3D features.

The Affinity suite is the second graphics suite Serif made. The other one was windows only, became bloated and wasn't ready for modern hardware, so they started from scratch.

The predecessor of Affinity Designer was DrawPlus and among its features were Envelope and Perspective tools.

So no, they're not sticking to what they know. They've done it before so they know damn well how that stuff works but some decisions were made to not implement it for some reason.

Xzenor, thank you for that piece of info about DrawPlus. Damn! that gets me fuming. What #@XX!!?? is going on......!? Less brand($#@!) polishing, more product!

Well let's be reasonable. They're not keeping it from us just to annoy us. They're not bad people I think. There must be a reason. I wonder if they're even aware that it's such a wanted feature.

With respect Xzenor, I believe that ten pages of mounting frustration in this forum hosted by Affinity is mind boggling if the company were to claim ignorance. Not least to mention being aware of one's market. Then to hear that it was available in past versions(DrawPlus)! Ignorance or intention which is it? Again I do appreciate your pointing out the axed features.

The great thing, for us Apple users, would be Apple buying Serif and pumping a lot of resources in the development, as they have done with Final Cut and Logic.

The bad thing, for us Apple users, would be that the Affinity series would only work on Apple hardware, and we would no longer be able to suggest an alternative multi-platform solution.

Not so sure that would be a great thing in the end.  Aperture and Shake were both amazing products and were dropped from the product line, though Aperture had no legitimate equivalent on the market that could match it (and still does not in many ways).  Color was a legitimate color correction program that was supposedly "merged" into FCPX (yeah right).  iMovie used to be a good product, and the UI in GarageBand made sense at one time...

Apple does make a few great apps, and they make some of the best platforms for end users, but they have also made some highly questionable changes to their apps and even cancelled some outright that had bright futures ahead of them.

How is that a bad thing?

I don't see an issue with telling people that if they want to use the best software they need to use the best computers...

If you live in the world of corporations, you can't make a PC-based department change to a Mac-only set of applications. It would simply be a non-existent solution.

That's just your opinion, buddy. This is not the place to start an OS discussion. There's no need for 10 more pages of useless discussion about which is better.

Affinity software works for windows and Mac and we all help each other. Leave it at that.

Affinity's lack of interest in offering or developing an array of basic tools in Designer speaks to other priorities. There are so many missing basics that any exteranious features are undermined. Making it frustrating to work details when the foundations are missing. Transform, very limited selection options, Trimming..... basics. Jowday's comment's have merit.
