Designer grid sizing limit

From memory this has been previously raised but I thought it had been fixed. If so the problem has returned in latest release. When set to inches, the largest Gris size possible is 0.853 inches.

The max grid size is fixed in all units and looks to be tied to being an unsigned short char variable 8 bits wide as the number in pixels is 1 to 256, less 1 is 0 to 255 which is the maximum size of an 8 bit number.

I was going to say by design as you always have the guide options to set ‘A‘ rows by ‘B’ columns to create a custom grid, however on closer inspection when you change to pixels as dimensions there seems to be a number of minor deficiencies with very small grid and division options where they don’t work as set and don’t prevent unusable settings too. So yes bug but not something so far I can’t live with .

Uh when looking at the symmetry question and this one I was shocked to find that guides, unlike the grid disappear when you select the paint brush tool both in a pixel persona on AD and in AP, surely that has to be a bug Dave?

Paul, I think the symmetry guides are meant to replace the normal guides but they lack any accurate placement control. Without controls you’d definitely need the document guides. So either a bug or a need for more controls!

Seems a strange implementation to me, it is trying to be too clever by half, it should work simply like this :-

1. if you want grid show grid if you don’t want grid hide it

2. If you want guides show guides if you don’t want guides hide them

From a software engineers point of view a possible  reason for the symmetry guides replacing the normal guides is because the same low level code is being called to do normal or symmetry guides and without re-design can’t display both at the same time. Still just a software problem though.

The grid part actually does operate as described, so you may be right about the guides implementation.

Hi DM1,

As far as I'm aware this is a bug, as larger values are possible on the desktop - it is something that is already with development so I will get it bumped with them.
Thanks for the heads up.  

EDIT: I should also add that the maximum value for grid spacing is inversely proportional with the DPI value. The higher the DPI, the lower the maximum grid spacing value.

My goal is to create a floor plan in inches for a room that’s 120”x214” and use the grid to help me eyeball distances, but this is blocking me. Is there a better way to do this?

@A Graham I set up a page size of 12x24 inches (1/10 scale), then set up a 0.5 inch grid. Would that work for you?
