Can't save my file on an external hard disk

nyc

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have the Affinity Designer (ver 1.8) installed on my desktop PC running WinPro7 64bits.

Whenever I save my files to an external hard disk, I always have the message 'Failed to save document; Save failed because access to the file was lost. Do you wish to save the document to a new file?' (see attach jpeg file)

It is not an issue if I save the file to an internal hard disk. Kindly assist if I had missed out something, thanks. My external hard disk is not full and also not on read only mode.

What kind (Make/model) of hard disk is it and how is it connected to your PC?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Are you opening the file from the external drive and then trying to save it back there

or you opening a file on your internal drive then trying to save to the external drive?

I had tried both methods before, apparently they do not work.

I have tried opening files using programs like Photoshop and Libreoffice and had no issue with saving to the external hard disk, therefore external hard disk should be in working condition.

Also, I have no issue with opening a file from external hard disk and saving to my internal drive.

Hi nyc,

Looking at your screenshot it appears that you're trying to save over the PDF.

PDF files cannot be output using File > Save, and instead you will need to use File > Export > PDF. When doing File > Save with a PDF file it will automatically add the .afdesign extension.

Are you able to get a screen recording showing the process (from opening) that you're doing to recreate this issue?

Hi Sean

I have attached 4 photos of the process that led to the error message, description of the process as below:

Photo 1) This is work in progress that I want to save on the external hard disk.

Photo 2) I went to 'save as,' I do understand that if I want to output to pdf for my final product I should go to export but in this case I would like to save the file as there are still work left to do.

Photo 3) Save as affinity file on external hard disk 'G'.

Photo 4) This is the error message.

I will not encounter the error message if I were to choose an internal hard disk.

Hope the attached photo help to illustrate.

Oh my gosh, this has been going on for over two years.
I started having the same problem after upgrading my Mac to Ventura 13.
So, I'm doomed, LOL!

Anyway, I hope Serif finds a solution for this problem.

I'm getting the same problem on both Photo and Designer.

Are you trying to save the document on an exFAT drive?
Then save the document to the internal drive and copy it to the external.

Thanks, Ashf, that is precisely what I have been doing to dodge the problem.
I guess the sistema file of the drive might just be the problem as you mention it.
I'll google the fix for my FAT 😃

Guess what?
It worked!
I changed the FAT from exFAT to APFS and that fixed the conflict.
I can't thank you enough for the suggestion.

I hope this thread helps other users with the same problem.

Yes, there's no problem with Apple's native format - APFS & HFS+.
