How do i use the Relative to-Option "Top of Page" in the Baseline Grid properly?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone
I’ve got a question about the Baseline Grid or more specific about the Relative to-Option "Top of Page". In the Affinity Publisher Support it says this:
"Relative To—specify what the baseline grid's starting position is in relation to. The Top of Page option is used for facing page spreads arranged vertically—you can restart the grid from the top of the second page in the spread."

My question is: How can I restart the grid from the top of the second page? I kinda don't understand the function. Is there a good Tutorial who explains it? Thx for your feedback.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, Christian.

From that Help, I would think that with vertical facing pages (as opposed to horizontal) you just select that option and it's automatic.

Have you tried that?

Hi Christian Denzler,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

That document has horizontal facing pages - in that case both Top of Page and Top of Spread will look the same because they match - so there's no visual changes. Open the attached sample file top_of_page.afpub  which is is a document with vertical facing pages. Make sure View > Show Baseline Grid is ticked. Zoom in enough until the baseline grid appears on screen. Go to menu View > Baseline Grid Manager to display manager. Position the document so you can see the separation between page 2 and 3. Change the option top of spread to top of page and you should see the baseline shifting a little to align the baseline grid with the top of the third page instead of continuing the grid from page two.

Here's a small clip showing the difference:
