@smadell created a macros file that creates selections based on luminosity. Perhaps that could help or point in right direction. Macro attached below.

Using out of the box functions:

  1. Create channel mixer adjustment
  2. set to lab mode
  3. select alpha channel
  4. Set L participation to 100%. Set alpha participation  to 0. save as preset for later reuse, to skip steps 1-3 by adding channel mixer from preset
  5. use channels panel
  6. load composite alpha channel to pixel selection
  7. delete / deactivate channels mixer when done
