Can only copy and paste one selection.

Recommended Posts

I am using an iPad Pro 2020 with affinity photo 1.8.3

Here is the bug, which I have spent hours trying to find a work around to and failed.

1. I enter selection persona and make any selection of my background layer.

2. I copy and paste the selection to a new pixel layer.

3. I de-select the section. No problem, I have copied and pasted my selection.

here is the problem.

4. I return to the background layer and enter selection persona again.

5. I select Another area of the background layer.

6. I copy and paste again.

7. THE NEW SELECTION IS NOT COPIED AND PASTED ONTO  ANOTHER PIXEL LAYER AS BEFORE. THERE ARE MARCHING ANTS AROUND THE SELECTION ON THE NEW PIXEL LAYER, BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO COPY THE SELECTION.

I have wasted hours trying to find a work around.

There appears to be a bug. Workaround is to make selection, refine and output to new layer. Untick new layer.  Reselect background layer and make new selection. Output selection to new layer. You can repeat this provided you untick each new layer.

Thank you for the reply but I can’t make it work.

Following your instruction, I can copy and paste my first selection using the refine tool, no problem.

Untick layer as you say.

When I select my next selection and refine, the refine tool won’t work correctly. It does not bring up the red background.

When I try and output to a new layer again I get the same issue.  A blank layer with marching ants where my selection has been made but no copied image.

The only way I can think of doing this is to cut and paste one selection. Save it as a jpeg. Reopen it and cut and paste my second selection. So on so forth😟

interested how you are making your selections without entering the selections persona using the shapes tools and pen tool.

I just create the shape (any shape ) with the shape tool, move it where I want it and then switch to the Pen tool. The pen tool has a 'output to selection" option which converts the shape to a selection. 🙂

Is that done on an iPad or the desktop version.

I have never been able to do this.

Still can’t.

It is been driving me nuts, my only work around was what has been suggested to me.

Use an additional tool, refine selection and output as a layer.  Very odd.

Have a look at one screen recording, perhaps I am making a nooby mistake!

kind regards.

It’s a common mistake. Don’t worry about it. We’ve all been there!

@Gabe Hi Gabe, I can’t remember if the earlier versions behaved the same but what confused me was that when using refine with a selection, the previously copied areas appeared on the refine screen too. Probably because the previously copied layers sit above the main layer so they show over the red mask unless unticked. It still only copies the 'selected' area even though several areas appear clear on the mask.
