Hi,

I have group of objects (or images) underlayed with another colour object. Then I add pixel mask with gradient pixels to this group and leave the default blend mode on "passthrough" for the group. The result of colour mixing is weird. See my screenshot. The expected result appears with "normal" blend mode on this group with pixel mask. Is this normal, or is it bug? I don't understand what kind of math is behind it, but I would expect the same normal result with the "passthrough" blend mode too.

Thanks for that.
Strange. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with your document, at first glance, but the effect does seem to be unexpected.

The Help says that “For a group, the default [blend mode] is 'Passthrough'. When set, the group itself has no special blend properties of its own, and passes on the blend mode of its parent layer.” but what’s the parent of a layer at the root of the tree? I would have thought that would be the document which would have a Blend Mode – if it had one – of Normal (what else would it have?).

You can alleviate the effect by changing the Blend Gamma of the ‘passthrough’ group to below 1.5 via the Blend Ranges Options (see attached video) but I don’t know if that’s a real/proper solution/fix or just a workaround.

Maybe an expert will see this and comment with their extra knowledge/experience.

The blending of masked (pixel mask and vector mask) Passthrough groups has been broken since the 1.7.3 or earlier version of the apps.

Note that the appearance is correct where only the canvas/paper is under the group.

Here is a screenshot of a similar example shown in Publisher 1.7.3

"passes on the blend mode of its parent layer" in the description in the Help is nonsense. Passthrough mode means the members of the group blend with the image below the group as if the members were not in a group. See the screenshot below.

(Be aware, though, that Passthrough is dysfunctional in current Affinity apps when a group contains a mixture of Live Filter/Adjustments and objects that are not Live Filter/Adjustments; in such a case, the Live Filter/Adjustments fail to affect the image below the group.)

I think the blend mode of the document itself is (or is the equivalent of?) "Passthrough" -- that is, it has no no special blend properties of its own.

But as you said, it would be nice to get clarification from the staff about it.

I wonder if we can get some clarification from the team about this as it seems quite important.

Can we get some clarification of the "this" to which you refer? :D

There are several candidates for your "this" in this thread.

I don't know whether it is technically correct to say the document has a blend mode, but the document content is Normal blended with the "paper"/"canvas" in the document view, and it is Normal blended with a matte when one is specified in export options.
