iPad Photo: I can’t get feathering of selections to work

I see and use the feathering tool and I see as the marching ants are gets more rounded as feathering increases. However when I paint, the result is as razor-sharp as if the feathering were Zero.

What am I missing?   Thank you!

 

What I missed was tapping the “Apply” check mark
