Hi,

I'm using affinity photo for a year and it's fantastic. Last month I tried to make some few cartoons of people, with affinity photo.

Is affinity designer worth it, to make cartoons & anime? Why should I buy affinity designer, if I already have affinity photo? I downloaded the free trial of affinity designer yesterday and saw a few tutorials made by affinity, but couldn't find a clue yet why I should buy it. Could somebody tell me why I should buy designer it or not and what tools makes designer a better program?

(The pictures are two examples of my work)

Hi,

We're not here to sell the apps but to help you if you have difficulties with them.

If for now you can't find any reason to use Designer, and the demo version didn't convince you to buy it, don't. Perhaps later, you'll want to use it for a special project and buy it and get fun using it.

You can also look at the art made with it in the forum or on https://affinityspotlight.com  and decide you want it to try new ways to work. :)

With APhoto you'll mainly use pictures or brushes for painting.

With ADesigner, you can use brushes too, some give a nice paint effect in the vector brushes panel, but mainly you'll use vector. It's a different way of thinking and building your work. I came from old school with real paint and brushes, and it take me time to be at ease using vectors (it should be perfect from the start, or nearly, you won't put a lot of strokes to correct some curves as you would do with paint or pencils).

But it can be interesting, and can lead to completely different work, since it's another way of thinking.

The second of your drawing can be done with vectors, for example. You'll use curves and have an easier way to modify them using the handles of the nodes, for example, being able to add and modify strokes, etc.

Simply spoken all tools you don't have in APhoto can make it worth to use ADesigner instead. There are many resources around to see examples and tutorials, even within the Affinity forums. Another approach would be reading in the online Help ... https://affinity.help/   Its 4 first and 4 last chapters might tell unknown (differences) quite obvious.

Are you serious you have no idea?.  Obviously you do not know the differences.  Aphoto is for editing photos.  Adesigner is for drawing.  Simple but not quite.  I tend to draw and edit in Aphoto but the files are bitmap files.  Try blowing these up to twice its original size and beyond and see the graininess and staircasing on the lines as the pixels just get bigger.  Adesigner on the other hand is vector based giving you freedom to resize as small or large as you like and it will still look perfect if the file is done correctly.  For example if you ever design a logo for a company using Aphoto you better make the original as large as it will ever be as it cannot easily be made larger, whereas a vector based graphic made to suit a typical A4 document can resized to the size of building and the graphic will retain the perfect lines and shapes with no degradation to quality.

Does that help ?

  1. Problem: You need a complimentary vector app
  2. Reaction: Deliberate on whether you need Affinity Designer 🤔
  3. Solution: Buy Affinity Designer, 50% off are you crazy, you're deliberating!!!! it’s the best £25/$25 you’ll ever spend, it will only ever get better and you get to play with it everyday… It’s like a Wonka bar you can never finish
