Masks and rasterising

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

not sure if that title is right. I’ve attached a couple of images. Basically just trying to in affect cut the image In half and end up with 2 halves that I can the manipulate. At the moment on the second file I can only then move / manipulate the left hand side in the new mask. Hope that makes sense!?!? Sorry still a newb!

thanks for any help!

Several ways to do this. You have selected a range of pixels and simply moved them. Still one image.
Try this: Change to selection persona, select part of your image, tap refine, select output as new layer (or new layer with mask if you want to adjust mask shape later). This creates a new layer based on your selection. This layer can be manipulated separately. Return to original layer, delete selection (gets other half), select, refine (paint to get edges defined) and output selection as new layer or new mask layer. Now you have two new layers that can be repositioned to give original shape.

Hey,

Really appreciate your help. Following exactly (I believe) what  you have said, once I've created a new layer for one half I do as you say and return to the original layer, when you say delete selection i'm not sure what you mean. The orginal layer is of course the full image, the new layer is the half image. The selection mask I drew originally is no longer there when I return to the original image. The best I can do at the moment as I must be missing something  is move the new layer away so I an see it, then as best as possible draw out a new selection on the original image trying to be as accurate as possible, then go through your first steps to create a 3rd layer (the other half) when I then put the 2 new layers together they are not that accurate but in this instance will do.

So I think I'm missing something at the ''Return to original layer, delete selection (gets other half)'' step!! Sorry to be dumb!!

If you long press on screen with your finger (not pencil) a menu will pop up. It should have a Reselect option. You need to move back to selection persona for selections, and edit persona for deletes. Follow the screen recording and make sure you have the correct layer selected for each action.

when i have reslected the original selection

You haven't actually selected the original layer yet. The tick box simply makes the layer visible. 🙂

Tap on the bottom layer to select it (it will change colour slightly) then do the cut.

Don't worry you'll soon get the hang of it. 😁

even with a new file and just creating a rectangle as you did, I still get the same results!

The rectangle is not a raster (pixel) layer (it’s a vector image) so you are not really selecting the squares pixels, just identifying the masking area. When you reselect and hit cut it deletes the whole image because there are no pixels selected. In the layer studio you will find a menu with the Rasterise layer option. Select the layer, tap menu/rasterise and try again. It will work this time because you are dealing with pixels. You may need to rasterise your virus image. I note also that for some reason your virus image is in a group, suggesting more than one layer? Open the group, select the virus layer, rasterise it, draw the selection and go from there. 🙂

Just duplicate your selection, then in original layer delete that section since you have already duplicated it. Now you have the two separate layers you can move around.

Note

I use pasteboard->cut as delete but there is a single finger press delete option but personally I don’t like those gestures at all and avoid them as always have Apple Pencil in my hand and it’s very inconvenient to have to use your finger.😀
