Modifying Affinity Publisher 1.82 master page elment

Recommended Posts

That is not content from a Master Page, Jim. If it were from a Master Page, there would be orange bars to the left of the frame content.

You must select master page in Pages panel.

And it is a Master Page.

No. Content of Master Pages has orange bar, content show as subgroup, and page in Pages panel has blue frame (edit: color is not critical, it changes depending on whether the icon is currently selected - highlighted by clicking).

And content from Master Pages can not be changed in Pages, is locked (frame handle is "x"). That is, if the page content is not detached, which is displayed as a dashed orange bar.

In those latest screenshots you're working on the master page, not working on a document page. The Master has the gray rectangle around it in the Pages panel.

The color of the frame is probably not critical - if the Master/Page icon in Pages panel is clicked, the frame is blue. Important for selection and display in Layers Panel is double click.

but the title of the master page does not

If I understand it correctly, then you are interested in this subgroup - on which content can be detached.
image.png.a0681b7d373ec7330ffb59ace2e21b06.png

We are a bit confused that you are still writing/displaying the contents of the "master" page ("I need to modify an element on a master page"), since detach is done on Pages, not on Master Pages.

The main problem I see is that you don't display the orange bar that indicates the content on the Master Page.
Content on Page, and on Master Page - is always marked orange.

Try to create a new document if it's a specific problem with this document or APublisher.

The color is critical.

A blue-framed page (document or master) in the Pages panel is selected for operations in the Pages panel. You get that with a single-click on the page in the Pages panel.

A gray-framed page (document or master) in the Pages panel is the current active page for editing, regardless of what i sdisplayed in the workspace. You get that with a double-click on the page in the pages panel, or selection via the Page Navigator (tobbom left of the page).

It appears that Jim is actually working on a master page, but thinks he is working on a document page. They behave differently :)

If a Master Page is not used in any Page or Master Page (MPs can be nested, btw), any member of the MP is not given an orange bar unless that member is an instance of a Symbol (in which case, the orange bar is gradated as usual for an instance of a Symbol), which itself could be a MP (a MP is implemented with the Affinity Symbol functionality, btw); I don't know whether the lack of orange bar is deliberate or a bug.

A master page element never has the orange bar unless you're looking at a document page. If you're looking at the master page itself, all layers are normal layers.

Sorry; wrong.

Not seeing that here - that only occurs if the MP has not been assigned to any page

If assigned to a normal page all layers on the MP turn orange to indicate they are now "synced" to a normal page

That's not true in Publisher on a Mac.

I'm viewing a Master Page, not a regular Page, in the app right now, and an element of that MP has an orange bar if the MP is used in any Page or other MP, as I stated earlier.

Thanks, @anon2 and @carl123.

Looking again, I do have the orange bars even when looking at the master page itself, if the master is assigned to some page. I'm not sure what I was looking at earlier.

Gray, or blue - then color is not critical :-)

I think this way of displaying the status is not good, because it is not unambiguous.

I agree. Especially as I just found a case where it was highlighted blue and was the active page being edited.

That is easy to do. (Apologies if you already know all this.) Double-click on a master or document page (spread or single page) in the Pages studio panel to make it active. Now click again on that page. Notice that not only is it is now outlined in blue, its name (if a master page) or its page number(s) also are highlighted in blue.

It is also possible in the Pages tab to select multiple pages, including a mix of left & right hand pages & spreads, like this:

1168655944_multiplepagesselected.jpg.85f1dd4d70a5dade7750edf7ac40dddf.jpg

This can be done while any other master or document page or spread is the active one -- here it was done while a Master page was active, so it is entirely possible to have one grey & multiple pages highlighted at the same time.

There are several uses for this, like dragging a Master page onto all the blue-highlighted document pages to add it to them all in one step, but it quite confusing nevertheless.

Closer review showed me that my Master Pages, which were created for the whole document before any data was entered contained some content data. I was trying to change data on the document pages that was in the Master Pages. Returning to the starting line was the better answer - amd numc more care is being taken to properly names the elements on the master pages in the Layers Panel.

Thanks to you all.
