Hi,

With the previous Designer version, you could click on use margins from printer. I cannot see this feature in the new select page section. Do I need to create a custom page for each size I want, then add my printer's margins or is there a setting I am missing?

Thanks in anticipation.

In the Margins tab of the File > Document Setup window, there should be a "Retrieve Margin from Printer" button.

Hello,

This button simply does not exist on my version. Any ideas?

I use version 1.10.4 on a Mac with macOS Monterey (12.0.1)

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I made a mistake, this is from Publisher not Designer. Pay no attention.

I am on 1.10.4 and it is here on 11.6.1 maybe an Apple 'improvement' for OS 12.

Picture deleted.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hmm. I don't see it in my version of AD either. Maybe it was removed in one of the recent updates?

Bruce, from the "Spread Setup" window title of your screenshot, it looks like you might be using APub. This is about Designer & its File > Document Setup window. I do not know of any way to access the "Spread Setup" window in AD.

So I think this is a bug introduced in one of the recent AD updates. The AD help topic still includes this:

Quote

Click Retrieve Margin from Printer to automatically set margins to the settings of your desktop printer.

But obviously that button isn't there. AP has the button in Document > Margins... so it is only AD that lacks it.

Is this referring to AD on Macs or all?

I am using AD 1.10.4.1198 on Windows 10 and have the retrieve margins from printer button but unfortunately it is not in new page options. At this point I have to know what my printer margins are and type them in, else I have to say create. Next, I need to go to document setup > margin tab and there I find the button at the bottom.

I was referring only to AD on Macs. I do not know what it is like in Windows.

What do you mean by "new page options"? Designer does not have pages.

New Document where you select the size of the document.

I don't think there has ever been an option to retrieve printer margins in the new document window of any of the Affinity apps. (You can set margins there, but not retrieve them from a printer.)

The button is currently missing from the margins tab in the AD File > Document setup... window on Macs & apparently also on Windows, which is probably a bug (or if you prefer an error of omission).

Hi RC-R

To clarify,

I made an earlier comment that I had the 'retrieve margins from printer button" on my Windows 10 AD desktop version 1.10.4.1198.

My reply was to Walt's comment that there is no new page option, as he thought I was mistaken. I referred to new page options instead of new document. I was trying to say that it would be more useful to have the button re 'retrieve margins from printer' when creating a new document rather than then, needing to edit the new document to get the correct margin for my printer. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

It thus, appears that it must be a Mac issue.

I see similar things on Photo and Publisher but in Designer I see

So, it's at least an inconsistency, and possibly a bug. Personally, though, it's never been clear to me which printer it's going to query (I have at least two) and so I've never used that function much.

I no longer have more than one printer to choose from but IIRC, on Macs it uses either the default printer (selected in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners) or the last printer used if it differs from the default. Since the Mac Affinity apps use the macOS printing service, the last used printer could be one used by another app ... I think.

I can confirm this has been raised with our developers previously and they confirmed internally that this functionality (retrieve margins from printer) does not exist on macOS in the same way it does in Windows and therefore this option should not be present within the macOS versions of the Affinity apps. (ie Designer is currently the only correct app)

I've updated this log to inform them the option is still present in Photo and Publisher and needs addressing for consistency between the apps.

I hope this helps :)

The ‘As System Palette’ option for creating a palette from the document isn’t available on Windows, but that hasn’t prevented its being made available for Mac. Why shouldn’t ‘Retrieve Margins from Printer’ be treated the same way?

By the way, the option label (as shown in @walt.farrell’s screenshot) says ‘Margin’ instead of ‘Margins’.

I'm sorry, I don't understand this question - AFAIK the 'As System Palette' option isn't available for Windows, as the OS doesn't support it natively, whereas macOS does support it, and therefore the option is there.

Much is the same for 'Retrieve Margins from Printer', but in the opposite manner - Windows natively supports this, whereas macOS doesn't, and therefore the option shouldn't be available within the Affinity apps for macOS.

Perhaps my post is easily misinterpreted, as I am only discussing the option within the macOS apps here, the options within Windows will remain, as the OS supports it.
I'll edit my above post now to make that clearer :)

When I press the retrieve button in APub or AP, margins are set (always to the same values), so does this mean they are arbitrary values & really are not anything retrieved from the printer?

According to the information I have in our development log; "There is no such thing as getting default margins from the printer on macOS", which would lead me to believe that these are arbitrary values - however I've been unable to find exact confirmation of the origin for the values given currently.
