Imported TIFF image with wrong dpi resolution

Hi,

When placing a TIFF file into a Publisher document, the dpi of the image is the wrong one. Publisher says it is a 300dpi image. Both APhoto, Photoshop and Apple Preview say it is a 72dpi image.

When resizing it in Publisher (menu on the top right of the window), the Scale value is increased over 100%. If I make it 72dpi, it is now a 417% of the original file. If clicking Original Size, I'm back with a 300dpi image.

Did I something wrong, or is there a bug somewhere?

Paolo

Publisher 1.8.2 Mac.

I just experience some similar vice versa for a JPG: the image exif says 300 dpi – APub Resource Manager says 72 dpi.
It doesn't occur with a TIFF of the same image file.

It reminds me to this known issue:

If I Place your image into a 300dpi Publisher document, and use the Move Tool's Context Toolbar options to make it the "original size", I see the following:

Note that the Resource Manager says 300dpi in the blue-highlighted bar, but the details on the right show the original dpi is 72.

In the Context Toolbar:

The image in the document (at Original Size) is about 1.5 inches wide. At 72 dpi it would be about 6.27 inches, which seems more like the proper "original" size. I'm not sure what's going on...

I haven't tried in APub. But the image is 72 dpi...or is not actually recorded in the file.

It is a 72 dpi image, but it is treated by APub as a 300 dpi one. Apart for the information box reported by @walt.farrell here above.

I myself don't know of a way around the issue when placing an image. Affinity applications (at least AD/APub) will always use the document dpi to initially size an image.

I once railed about this issue of having a document dpi. At least as regards APub, but in AD as well. Document dpi in a vector-based application should be limited to a raster effects default resolution.

That's part of what is strange about that "Original Size" button, Mike.

If we have a 72dpi image that (given its pixel dimensions) should be 6.27 inches wide, then Original Size could:

  1. Place it at 300 dpi but 6.27 inches wide; or
  2. Place it at 72dpi at 6.27 inches wide.

But it shouldn't place it at 300dpi and 1.6 inches wide, as it did for me. That can't possibly be "original size", can it, regardless of how we define size?

That image, with the number of pixels, shouldn't ever place at the size of your #1 point.

It should place as in your point #2. Like it does in every non-Affinity application I use...including Serif's PagePlus (when choosing Place at native dpi).

Can you attach the sample files and/or the afpub file so we can have a look?

In this .zip (34 kB) are the 2  images from my post above:   Archiv.zip

Note also this previous thread which mentioned already the unwanted/unexpected issue of placed image sizes, in particular low res images like screenshots:
