Swapping purchase to an Apple Store for automatic updates

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I've purchased Affinity Publisher directly with Serif. However, I now have to manually update the software. So when I turn on the software i have to wait till the update is downloaded & installed. With the AF Photo, that I bought via the Apple Store, it is updating automatically without me noticing.

Question is: Can i transfer my purchased subscription to an Apple Store, so the application is updated automatically?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, @RomanT.

If you read the forums you will see many reports of:

  • Various locations of the Mac App Store not showing that updates are available;
  • Users having problems where the Mac App Store recognizes that the update is available, but doesn't apply it automatically;
  • Not allowing the user to apply it manually without jumping through some hoops to make the update visible;

And (unfortunately, in 1.8) discovering that sometimes automatic updates can hurt you, if there are bugs in the new version that affect your workflow.

Also, users who purchased from the Mac App Store (or the Microsoft Store) cannot downgrade to an earlier release if they need to.

Also, there are some sandboxing effects on the Affinity applications when installed from the Mac App Store (or the Microsoft Store).

So, overall, in my opinion it's better to purchase directly from Serif, as you did. The advantages far outweigh any minor inconvenience of having to manually manage the downloads and installations.
