BTW, how will a Kickstarter campaign work in these cases? We collect $$$ for Serif to fix their programs? Are they willing to take it in?

No, that is not how we are funded nor a way we wish to drive the suite forward. More hours in the day would help, can anyone crowd source that ?

Our next beta of Affinity Publisher (build numbers > 1.8.4.649) will have changes/improvements in the area of punctuation, but we think this specialist area will need further improvements in the future.

ok... I appreciate for punctuation implementation.
I know vertical writing takes a time but Affinity user group in Japan is receiving enormous amount of request for vertical writing.
Everyday people tell us "I want vertical writing, that's all I want!"
So the development schedule/status is really sensitive information.

Ashf, I think I may have over raised your expectations of the changes that can reasonably be expected in version 1. We will do what we can but these changes you are referring to are going to take a long while to match. Also I follow this thread, so no need to @ me

It's ok. I just explained you the final form of feature we need.
But would be nice if you could implement simplified version of it at first.
For example, Word has line breaking rules and word spacing rules that's simple and yet usable enough.
Basically Japanese word spacing rules compress spaces only on Latin characters and symbols.

@Patrick ConnorDo you think you can add very simple word spacing rules soon?
Line breaking rules and word spacing rules are mean to work together so if you can add it soon, it make line breaking rules really usable.

For very basic one

These should be 50% width(no redundant space) if it's at the start of a line* or the right side of other brackets/punctuation or next to spaces.
([{〈《「『【〔〖〘〚)]}〉》」』】〕〗〙〛

* these can't be at the start of a line by line breaking rules as you know.

Personally I don't use vertical layout much but yes, it's very, very common for Chinese, and that includes peoples in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Yeah, me too. I mostly work with website related thing so vertical writing is not necessary.
But since almost 100% of publications including media such as book, magazine or newspaper in Japan is using vertical writing so people always put Affinity down just because of it.
Really pain to see it. I wish vertical writing didn't exist.

Here's a comment from omachi about line breaking rules.(in Japanese)
He suggested to use external file to assign target characters so you don't need to spend much time to improve rules or UI since Japanese users can create better rules by them self.
Also he suggested you to affiliate with a developer of discontinued Japanese text engine such as EDICOLOR, AVANAS BookStudio, ELWIN, UrbanPress, RYOBI EP-X in order to develop proper text engine quickly since Japanese typography is super complex.
Even Adobe asked Japanese developers to help to create Indesign.

Also please don't forget about Ruby(phonetics) feature.

Usually above the text(horizontal writing) and the right side of the text(vertical writing) is used.

The current punctuation "fix" is a makeshift workaround only.

If Serif is serious about capturing the CJK Asian market, they need to consult a proper expert and re-think the whole thing from the ground up.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers.

I know, like I posted the comment from omachi above, Serif need to hire the professional.
Hopefully one of Japanese text engine developer he mentioned.

But unless I keep posting the information periodically, Serif tend to lose what we posted.

I found this thread attempting to look for info on Chinese typesetting support for the Affinity Designer and Publisher. I would point you to a print publication in 2020 by thetype.com with regards to Chinese typesetting rules/norms (link below). I think it would benefit development hugely in terms of implementing CJK features. Typesetting features for Chinese are a lot less daunting in comparison to those of Japanese but they do overlap immensely with a few key differences.
