scgreentea Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Hi, objects are not going to selected layer in affinity designer any advice? i am using the latest 1.8.2 Quote
GarryP Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 (edited) I’m not quite sure what you mean by “going to” the selected layer. Most things that you create and use in the Affinity applications are layers in themselves – rectangles, images, groups, adjustments, masks, etc. are all layers. However, you can make a layer a child of another layer by dragging one layer in the Layers Panel over another layer (there are different ways to do it that have different uses). You can force the next created layer to be a child layer of another layer by using the “Insert Inside the Selection” button on the Toolbar before you create the new layer. Does any of that help? If not, you might need to give us more specific information about what you are trying to achieve. Edited March 19, 2020 by GarryP Added screen grab. Quote

As Garry mentioned, all objects are layers, and would not normally contain other objects/layers. But there is one special kind of layer, which will show up in the Layers panel as a (Layer) (note the capital L), which is a container for other layers/objects. You get one of those layers by clicking this icon at the bottom of the Layers panel, or by using Layer > New Layer from the menu: Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. scgreentea Posted March 19, 2020 Author Posted March 19, 2020 Thanks for the replies. i hope this might make it more clear, whether it is a bug or just me needing more time to get to know AD Layer problem.mp4 Quote
GarryP Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 Ah, I see. This happens for me too, even with “Insert Inside the Selection” switched on, when the 'empty' Layer is outside of the Artboard (seems to work okay when the Layer is inside the Artboard). I don’t know if this is expected behaviour or something else, but it doesn’t seem quite right to me. Quote
walt.farrell Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 The first part of the video seems correct to me. For the second part, I'm less sure, but I'm uncertain of the intended interaction between disjoint Layer layers and Artboards. Your Artboard was not inside the Layer, and so when you drew physically on the Artboard it might have taken precedence, even though the Layer layer was selected. What happens if you draw that final object outside the Artboard? scgreentea Posted March 19, 2020 Author Posted March 19, 2020 Thanks again, I think the problem is with me not fully understanding who the layers work. Thanks again your reply was helpful. Quote
