Can't use tools

I ran across a problem today while working on an illustration. All of a sudden I couldn't use couldn't use the tools, I could select them but when I brought the cursor into the drawing area it turned into a hand. I could move the whole illustration but couldn't use a tool. Have I selected something by accident?

Is there any chance that something was holding your spacebar down?

Thanks for the reply. I don't think the spacebar was the problem, but if this happens again, I'll check it.
