Affinity Photo appear not to be releasing memory

Recommended Posts

Affinity Photo appears not to be releasing memory when an image file is closed, as shown in the attached video.

The video opens with Affinity Photo having just been opened, with the memory used by AP shown in Task manager as 199.7MB.
A 10,000 x 10, 000 px TIFF image is then opened which takes AP's memory use to 1,383,7MB.

That file is then closed.  I would have expected the memory used by AP to drop back to around the 200MB area, but it doesn't. It remains at 1,344.9MB

My query is whether it should be doing this,  and if not, whether it is only occurring on my system?

Intel i7-2600 CPU @3.40GHz, 16GB RAM, GTX1050ti 4GB graphics
Windows 10 (1909 build 18363.720)
Affinity Photo 1.8.0.585

Intel i7-10700 Gen10 CPU, 32GB RAM, Geforce GTX 1660 OC 6GB
Windows 10 Pro 22H2, 1x 1TB M.2 NVMe, 1 x 2TB M.2 NVMe. Affinity APh, APu, ADe

Yes, it's "normal"

The Affinity Apps do not automatically release the memory used when you close a document but they will release it immediately when another program requires more memory that is currently free and available.

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

I have the exact same problem; and no, it seems the memory cannot be used by other software.image.png.ee29a78210412aea01fd08445de91e8f.png

What problem - the OP just asked if not immediately releasing memory when an image closes is normal.  The explanatory pop-up in your screen shot needs to be read in the light of @carl123's answer above i.e. the memory's not currently available but it will be released if needed.

AP, AD & APub user, running Win10

Is this normal?

Since you did not provide any detailed information (for example, what OS?, how much does CS6 take?, how much does APhoto take?), then probably no one will answer this question responsibly.

It may depend on the type of OS, but with Win it's an OS feature, not the application itself.

Same for Macs. One reason is several apps may be sharing memory to hold chunks of data that several of them are using. If any of the apps could release that memory when it no longer needed that data, the others would have to reload it & performance would suffer.
