Symbols are on a Per Document basis, so you can't make a set of symbols that are application wide so they can be used by multiple documents, only per document.

But... they are kind of transferable,

  1. Make a symbol in document 1
  2. Copy/Paste it to Document 2
  3. In document 2 you can duplicate that symbol and if you make edits to one, that edit will be reflected in the duplicate.
  4. The oddity is in document 2 the symbol won't show in the symbols panel until you select create
  5. The symbols in Document 1 and 2 become separate entities and changing a symbol in document 1 will not affect the symbol in document 2.

Hope that makes sense

Unless, of course, you make a Template document, and put the Symbols in it, and then start your new documents using that Template.

Actually come to think about it, you can add a symbol to the Assets panel, Assets are Application wide. If you drop an Asseted < new word Symbol onto the workspace it will show as a symbol in the symbols panel so you can duplicate and edit thus having Application wide symbols.

That is what I did for now. Works good, but I will try out the Assets way too.

I run a sign/graphics shop, and using Illustrator forever, so I am trying to get the things I need for that setup in Designer.
