tolls not working in Affinity 1.8 with Catalina

I'm losing the use of all tools apart from the hand tool in Photo 1.8 with Catalina. This happens after I carry out a few adjustments or masks. I have to close the image and start again which is frustrating. Any solution much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm really not sure what is happening here. All tools, apart from the View Tool stop functioning after adding some adjustments or masks? When you get in this state, can you save the afphoto file with history (Save History With Document from the File menu) and attach it here?

Welcome to Affinity Forums
Maybe you have created a small pixel selection accidentally somewhere which may still be active and all the effects, adjustments etc only work/are visible inside it. Have you tried to go to menu Select > Deselect All or press cmd+D to clear any active possible pixel selection that may still be around?
