Hey Guys,

we want to print something in black & White. We already changed the color of the document in grey. We also checked that the colors in the pdf are grey to. But our Printer keps telling us, that there are still colors in the document. I don't know what to do.

So i checked that blacks in the document there is going on some strange stuff.

If I choose 100% black as a color it shows me the black as 100% black and 0% CMY. But If I look at the black in the upper part (where you see the colors of the fillment and the borders) the black it uses all the Colors for the black. If I change the Black to 0/0/0/100 there, the black is like a dark grey.

I don't know if this is a bug or just normal. Seems strange to me.

I'm happy, If anybody could help me. See attached documents and the screnshots

Kid regards

First thing I did, was to remove the pre-installed palettes from Affinity. Heaven knows why I can't remove the Pantone palettes. The Grey palette is simply - in my eyes - wrong. So make your own palette with your own document or application palettes.

If I remember a staff comment correctly, it's because the Pantone palettes are shared among all users of the computer. If one user was able to delete them, they'd be gone for all other users, too.

The supplied "Grays" palette is an RGB palette. If you have a CMYK document you can make your own palette, or you can use the 3 swatches to the right side, which will give you 100% K, 50% gray, and white:

In my case I am the only user of the computer, so no problem. It would not be so annoying if: Every time I open a document I get the f... Pantone palettes shown as selected in the Swatches instead of my document palette.

Yes, Walt is correct - if you want to use "real" greyscale you are better off with a CMYK document.

If ya really want to not see the Pantone pallet entry:

Dang, cannot upload screen shots...

Go the the folder where the Pantone pallets are and rename the folder. I tried the beta location. Worked fine.

Thanks, I was not sure if I would damage something doing so.

Just renaming is reversible. So if I would have had issues, I would have renamed back, tried again and then let y'all know the consequences...not that I ran it very long...and I didn't try loading a file that used the spot colors, but even then I don't see it an issue.

At least in the 1.8 beta on Windows:

  1. Create an Application palette.
  2. Make it the default for the colorspace you want to use it in.
  3. If you have more colorspaces, either make that palette the default for them, too, or iterate.

This works in Publisher, but I haven't tested Designer or Photo, yet.

I don't know if this would be of any help to you, but long ago when the only app was AD for Macs, I asked if there was any way to disable the Pantone palettes, or at least most of them. One of the staff either suggested or confirmed (I can't remember which) that the old trick of adding an ".old" extension to the existing ones on the individual files in the Pantones folder would effectively disable them.

So for example, changing the PANTONE GoeGuide Coated.csv file to PANTONE GoeGuide Coated.csv.old effectively removed it from the Pantones list.

Note that this was not offered as an officially approved hack but as one that should work without any detrimental effects. It did for me at that time, although I never tried it again with any later versions of any of the Affinity apps.

Renaming the Pantone folder resp. renaming the files made it even worse. Beside the Pantone palettes I had a default CMYK palette (with a name) defined. After renaming, Pantone was gone and also the name of my default palette. The dropdown for swatches was simply blank.

Next thought was to have at last my palette selected. There is a file called Application.xml (on Windows) with two lines probably controlling the selected palette. But even this is not working. When the file is not write protected a Pantone palette is written as selected palette at application start to this file. Even when write protected and with another name as selected palette, a Pantone palette is selected.

Here are the lines, does anyone know the correct values? Serif?

<SelectedPaletteType>3</SelectedPaletteType>
<SelectedPaletteName>PANTONE+ CMYK Coated</SelectedPaletteName>
