Unable to fill self-intersecting loops

Recommended Posts

Draw an enclosed vector shape with an inward facing self-intersecting loop somewhere along that curve and then attempt to fill that loop, Designer will always attempt to fill the larger shape instead.

Hi EVH1,

Are you suggesting you also want the loop filled as well? What you're seeing is the normal behaviour of vector curves. If you want the loop to also be filled then you will need to switch your shape to use a Winding (otherwise known as Non-Zero) fill mode.

To do this select the object and go to Layer > Fill Mode > Winding (Non-zero). The loop will now get filled.

As a first time user I eventually deduced what was happening, but I thought that by default wherever I initially clicked would be the region filled, whether that was inside the loop, the parent shape, the line itself, or outside the border. I wasn’t able to figure out how to force it to fill the loop in addition to the base form, so I’ll try your suggestion.

Thank you.

As a first time user you may not yet have discovered that vector objects have separate stroke & fill attributes, or that either one can be set to 'no color' so that attribute is invisible. There are also several kinds of strokes that can be used, including various dashed styles. In Affinity Designer (& in the Designer Persona of Affinity Publisher if you have both apps) you can even apply multiple strokes to vector objects using the Appearance panel.

Strokes & fills.afdesign includes just a few of the possibilities.
