aleale1 Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Why don’t you allow us to create “Image Layers” and “Embedded Documents” right inside the current document without a headache creating them outside? Look how easy Photoshop is dealing with “Smart Objects”!
fde101 Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 What would be the benefit of creating an image layer from inside the document? I can partially understand the desire for embedded documents to be created in place, but not so sure about image layers...

One benefit would be that the layer would be completely locked from doing edits on since you can't draw or do any destructive editing until rasterising, something that the current layers system in Affinity lacks. That said, it would be more efficient to just add an edit lock button to solve that issue.

Trying to work around this issue by converting to an image layer and disabling the assistant functions would only be applicable to raster layers anyway, while a proper lock icon could be applied to vector shapes and would be useful throughout the entire Affinity suite.
