Add an artboard? Affinity Photo

I've spent an hour on this already and so hope someone can help. My searches say to add artboards to an existing document I shoud use the artboard tool. I found a picture of the tool so know what I am looking for, but where actually is it? I've tried customising the toolbar and looked in all the options but I can't find an artboard toolbar.

another suggestions was file, new... but here I only seem to have the option to create a new document, not to create an artboard in an existing document.

I guess I'm missing something obvious, but I've done my best to figure it out - please help.

I think Artboards are only available in Affinity Designer

As Gerard O said Artboards is a Designer's feature only.

I copy and paste artboards from one Photo file to another but it is a bit clumsy and there seems to be no way to create one from scratch in Photo.

Artboards? Artboards can be created in ADesigner. What are you trying to do? A bit more explanation on your workflow would be nice.

Affinity Photo doesn't support artboards natively. They must be created either in Affinity Designer or Affinity Publisher (Designer Persona) only. Affinity Photo is a RAW converter/developer and photo editing app - for what are you using artboards here?

Was hoping to do the same. Photo's export persona doesn't allow you to set up different layer visibility configurations for batch exporting, which is a real pain, and the only way around this seems to be artboards.

I don't see how Artboards would help with that.

Please explain more about what 'layer visibility configurations' you would like to export from AP. There may be a way to do this but we would need to know what you want to make visible or invisible in an exported file to help with that.
