Capture One can't find Affinity Photo anymore

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So I switched to Capture One and eventually also to Affinity Photo from using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop in the past. It's worked great up until today. I can't edit photos from Capture One in Affinity photo anymore. When right clicking and selecting "edit with" I just get the Browse file window. I bought Affinity Photo from Windows store so the program is inside the hidden WindowsApps folder. I have changed permissions to that folder but when ever I try to select the program file (photo.exe) in the "edit with" dialogue it just creates a new .tif file. It doesn't matter if I already have Affinity Photo open, and if I open the generated .tif file with AF it's not linked to the file in Capture One meaning that the edits I do in AF doesn't come through in Capture One.

I haven't had this issue in the past. I haven't installed any new versions of any of the apps. Any clues?

Thanks!

I just wanted to say I am having the same issue with Affinity Photo with the new update to version 1.8. All was working fine between Capture One Pro 20 and Affinity Photo 1.7, no luck after the update to 1.8. I will be watching this as capture one is my primary editor and I need AP for retouching work. Thank you.

Hi @Kaffia & @Subyspecialist,

Welcome to the forums :)

My sincerest apologies for the delayed response, due to the release of version 1.8 we have been somewhat inundated with tickets and this means our response time is a little longer than normal.

I've tested this with a trial of Capture One and Affinity Photo from the Microsoft Store and I believe the issue stems from which option is selected in Capture One.

If you right click and select Edit With then this will always generate a new file in Capture One, and transfer this file over to Affinity Photo.

If you don't want to create a duplicate image, right click and select Open With - this will use the original image, which you can then edit in Affinity and use File>Save to save the edited image back to Capture One.

I've included a screen recording of both these processes below -

I hope this helps!

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Many thanks!

Hi!

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately this doesn't do the trick. I don't even have the option to choose Affinity Photo on either 'open with' or

'edit with'. When I uninstall the version I bought from Microsoft Store and install the trial version of Affinity Photo downloaded from your site it works like a charm. I've tried opening the RAW files directly with AP so that Windows sets the relation. The RAW files open in AP but there is still no connection between Capture One and Affinity Photo. The strangest part is that I could do this a month ago. I still didn't see Affinity Photo in the 'edit with' or 'open with' menu but when I clicked 'Browse' I could select it. I can still click browse but now I don't get the 'installed apps' modal, just a regular file browser. From there I need to navigate to the folder that holds the photo.exe (so the executable Affinity Photo file). That is inside a hidden folder in Windows called WindowsApps. I've managed to set normal admin permissions to that folder but when I select open/edit with and choose the photo.exe file Affinity Photo doesn't open. The TIFF file gets created but there is no bridge between AP and CO. When I go to the plugin settings in Capture One and check the 'open with' apps I can't see Affinity Photo in that list.

I have talked to Microsoft support and asked if they could provide me with a serial key so that I can just use that with the trial version and don't use AF through WindowsApps. They don't have any serial key for me but instead asked me to check with you if you could provide me with a key with my order number from Windows Store as a proof of purchase. Could you help out with that? I don't want to post my order number here if someone else grabs it. I've send an email which Gareth kindly responded too, linking to this your response here (I didn't get a notification when you responded. I've enabled response notifications now though 😛)

Thanks again for all your help! I hope I can fix this so I don't have to buy another copy of Affinity Photo just to get the connection working. Please let me know if I can provide you with any more information.

Best regards,

Anders

Neither works even when you Browser to the proper file to find the photo.exe program?

Initially you said you had tried that with "Edit with" but you haven't said you tried browsing to the program using "Open with".

Hi Walt,

sorry, I should have mentioned that too. It's the same with 'open with'. Neither case works even if I choose Browsy with and select the .exe file.

Let me know if I can provide any more information that you might need from me. Again, thanks for the help!

Apologies for the delayed response Anders, I'm not certain why this isn't working for you as I can't replicate this behaviour on my test machine with both apps installed from the same sources as yourself.

Could you possibly provide a screen recording showing your actions from Capture One? Many thanks!

Hi Dan,

this is a screen recording where I demonstrate my issue. It's in Swedish but the menu item "Redigera med" is Edit with, and the other one I show, "Öppna med" is open with.

As I demonstrate here I have to choose Affinity Photo from the file browser, inside the WindowsApp folder. I have opened RAW files directly with Affinity Photo so Windows knows about the file connection.

Let me know if you want me to record another scenario.

Hope this help!

Capture One: 20.0.3
Affinity Photo: 1.8.0.585

Best regards,

Anders Södersrtröm

Sounds like my issue is exactly the same as Kaffia. Capture One Pro version 12 previously never allowed me to directly select Affinity as a plug-in in edit-preferences, affinity has never directly shown as a selectable option in edit with or open with. This was confusing to me as I have seen other users online and YouTube showing opening Affinity via edit with or open with directly.  I upgraded to Capture One Pro 20 and it continued to work the same. My copy of Affinity photo was purchased through Microsoft store also. My workaround has always been right click image in capture one>edit with>Choose an app>Affinity photo>tiff is generated and opens in Affinity.

Unfortunately edit with or open with no longer show choose an app as an option since the newest update to capture one version 20.03 and the update to Affinity Photo 1.8. Both programs were updated to most recent versions around same time so not sure where the issue is coming from. I currently have no physical way to round trip open affinity anymore from capture one.

I am using Capture One Pro 20.0.3 full unlocked version and Affinity photo 1.8 most up to date revision.

Thanks for your screen recording Anders. Firstly you shouldn't need to manually select the .EXE for the app each time, it should appear as a setting option you can manually enable/disable.

Please go to Edit>Preferences and then select the Plugins tab. Here you should be able to 'check' the Affinity aap, as shown below -

image.png

Once this is done, you should find Affinity Photo appear in the Open/Edit with context menus.

I can see in your recording you use the "Redigera med" (Edit with) option, as explained previously this will always create a duplicate image and this is a function of Capture One, so it's nothing that Affinity can control.

Please set your plugin settings as above, then try using "Öppna med" (Open with) and you should find that Affinity Photo appears in the list and should not create any duplicate, if you follow my workflow provided previously.

@Subyspecialist Could you please confirm for me, are you saying that Affinity Photo doesn't appear in the Plugin list for you, as shown in my above screenshot?

@Dan C that is correct it has never shown as an available option in the plugin list. The more I research the more I wonder if it is due to the fact that I purchased my copy of Affinity via the Microsoft store. With the app being hidden in the hidden windows apps file it seems that capture one cannot see photo.exe. I also have not been able to  have any success using browse to locate photo.exe as windows apps folder is hidden from view through the edit with/open with>browse command in capture one.

Thanks for confirming that. As far as I can see from my research, Capture One uses the same options that Windows 10 offers you when selecting 'Open With' from Windows Explorer -

Quote

"Capture One simply relies on the operating system on what is displayed as an associated application. If you right-click a file outside of Capture One the same list will appear. To add a file association this is hence not done in Capture One.

Use windows file explorer, right-click a file, select to browse for an application and open it with that application. Once this is done it will be mirrored to Capture One and available there as well as in the rest of the OS."

Could you please try this and let me know if this changes Capture One behaviour? You may need to change the 'Default app' for certain file types in Windows Settings for Affinity to appear in this context menu :)

Thanks for your screenshot Anders, can you please try following my suggestion in the above post regarding default Windows apps? As this setting is controlled by Windows and not Capture One seemingly.

Hello again,

I tried that once more but no dice. When I right click on a raw file I immediately get the option to open it with Affinity Photo. If I still choose  to browse for an application and open it with that application I also get the option to open with Affinity Photo right away. I can do a screen recording of that if you want. I've tried to do this a few times, restarted Capture One, and also restarting Windows but no luck.

Again, all of this works if I uninstall the Affinity Photo app I bought from Windows Store and download and install the trial version from Affinitys website instead.

Let me know if you want me to try anything else. Thanks so much for helping me out!

@Dan C @Kaffia I tried what you suggested and had no success. Right clicking using windows file explorer on a raw image and going to open with affinity shows up just fine. Going into capture one and right clicking a raw file edit with and open with do not show affinity. In capture one-edit preferences>plugins-affinity photo is also not shown.

Thanks for all the further information provided here and I'm sorry to hear this is still an issue for a select few of you.

do you know if any upcoming patches might fix this? If not, would it be possible to get a licence key? I have the purchase order to Microsoft as a proof of purchase.

Unfortunately we can't transfer purchases from the Microsoft Store to the Affinity Store (ie provide a product key) regardless of whether you can provide proof of purchase, this has been the case since we started selling directly from Affinity, my apologies.

Any patches to the Affinity apps won't affect the Microsoft Stores' 'sandboxing' as regardless of the version we release, apps are always provided in this manner. This is something that is beyond our control, as apps have to be sandboxed in order for us to sell them on the Microsoft Store.

I would recommend contacting Capture One at this time, to request their advice when using Capture One with sandboxed applications as this is all unfortunately beyond Affinitys control.

For what it may be worth, I installed two other photo editing apps from the Microsoft Store and I was unable to get Capture One to work with them, either.
