richard gold Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 Ladies and Gents, I am using the workbook but keep having a problem opening up the proper 'resource files.' I type in the address https://affin.co/photocoreskills and nothing seems to register. One time it seemed to work but I could never get the actual resource files for the chapter I was in. I make as much progress as possible without these files but some of them would be helpful. Any hints? Thanks, Photodoc16 Quote
walt.farrell Posted March 1, 2020 Posted March 1, 2020 A few hints. First, make sure you type the URL exactly as printed. Any errors (using .com instead of .co for example) will cause problems Next, make sure youre typing it into the address bar at the top of your browser window, not into a search bar. Those may seem obvious, but users have had issues with both of them. If you get it right, your browser will immediately download the file, or if you've configured it to ask, it will ask if you want to download it. Depending on your browser and configuration, is it possible that the downloads are happening silently and you're not noticing? Also, sometimes the resources are not separate files, but are snapshots within a .afphoto file. So the download will get you the .afphoto file, and maybe an image file for you to work on. But some of the resources are named snapshots in that .afphoto file. That is explained in the workbook, too. (And, apologies if you're an expert and you knew all that; it's hard to know in the forums.) richard gold Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 Mr. Farrell, A belated 'thank you' for answering my last question. Unfortunately, these Resource files remain an issue for many people and the 'bugs' should be worked out immediately before many potential users will abandon Affinity. For instance, I can open the photocoreskills package but opening the exposure_adjustments.ORF files is another matter. In the workbook it states "use File>Open to load the 'exposure_adjustments.ORF files. And how do I do that? I tried getting out and starting Affinity and going to File>Open that way with no success. When I click on the files in the zip package it just opens a series of ads for many of the Affinity programs. None of the sliders described in the workbook appear. This is getting very frustrating. Would you take me through this so I can actually get the most out of this workbook? Thanks, Richard Quote

You're welcome. Your download was a .zip file. First, you open it and unzip or extract it to a directory of your choosing. For that step in the workbook, you then use File > Open and then navigate to the Developing Raw Images directory that was unzipped, and you'll find the exposure_adjustents.ORF file. I suspect (but only someone from Serif would be able to confirm) that they assumed users would know how to deal with .zip files (open them, unzip/extract) as that is basic computer knowledge, not something specific to the Affinity applications. They probably should have been more clear about that, however. I don't see that mentioned in the introductory material, at least in my edition of the book. richard gold Posted March 26, 2020 Author Posted March 26, 2020 Thanks again. I will work with this and see what I can do. It is interesting that in this first part of the Core Skills chapter, I could use it without the Resource files. I suspect that will work with others. However, I did skip ahead a while ago for a lesson on Photo Stacking (I think) and the Resource files I used (opened them myself somehow) were very interesting. Richard Quote
richard gold Posted April 5, 2020 Author Posted April 5, 2020 Mr. Farrell, Turns out I did actually open up the zip files and then had access to the resources for each chapter. I find that I have to drag and drop the teaching images into the workspace but it is working well. I posted separately that I cannot get the selection brush tool to work. I just get a circular cursor but no evidence of a dotted line to make a selection that snaps into place. Thanks, Richard Quote

Sounds like you have not actually extracted the files from the zip archive and saved them in their unzipped form. As an alternative to simply opening the archive and dragging files from it, you could navigate to the .zip file from within Photo, open it there by double-clicking on it, and keep navigating into the file until you find the file you need. But extracting the zip archive fully will prove easier in the end, I think. No, that's not where you're directed. You have added an m that is not in the instructions. It is affin.co not affin.com R C-R 1 Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. JacqueR Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 i have tried to find these files with the "m" and without. i am familiar with how to unzip a file. my problem is to find the working files. the files for photo downloaded right away when i copied the link from this forum. But i cannot get connected to the files for designer or publisher. New problem: i started to work with the new photo v2. it is problematic. saved files cannot be opened in another software. (my painting progran) i tried saving as a psd. or jpeg. or first saving as an affinity file and then trying to resave the file. Any of the files saved in Affinity are not recognied in another software. it simply doesn't respond to it. ?! i am in the middle of a project. The files are a problem. Did I get a corrupted download? Remember to put it directly in the browser's address bar. You can't search for them. And please show us a screenshot of the browser, with the exact URL visible, before you press enter.
