I have been using Affinity Photo 1.8.1 since yesterday (02/27/2020). Since I have been using Affinity Photo 1.7.3 regularly for several months, this error caught me by surprise. I like to Copy Layers between two open images on a regular basis. Under Affinity Photo 1.7.3 I have done this hundreds of times. When I attempted to COPY a Layer containing an embedded mask, by right clicking on the layer, then selecting Copy, Affinity Photo 1.8.1 crashes and burns. Any editing not saved is completely lost. The Copy works fine if there is no embedded mask. However, a Copy of a Layer with an embedded mask causes a crash. Sincerely, DPR

Below is the information in the report I send to Apple:

The error is reproducible at any time on Affinity Photo version 1.8.1 on my Mac computer. I just created a quick Affinity Photo image with one single layer. The image is a green rectangle with an oval made with an embedded mask. As soon as I 'right click' on the layer, then select 'Copy', Affinity Photo crashes and burns. This error occurs on ANY image with a layer or layers that have an embedded mask.

As noted, this particular command sequence on Affinity Photo 1.7.3 was used hundreds of times with no error. Also, on Affinity Photo 1.8.1 the command sequence (i.e. select layer, 'right click', select 'Copy') works fine with any layer NOT containing an embedded mask.

Sincerely, Daniel

Layer With Embedded Mask Test.afphoto

Hi DPR,
I asked for a file because the issue could be related with a specific layer construct you may have made. I did create a few files with embedded masks on my own before asking for the file and none of them crashed while performing a copy to another document using the right-click, neither it crashes for me with the file you posted above (on Catalina or Mojave). I'm logging the issue along with the crash report you posted to see if we can get something useful from it but sometimes the crash report alone is not enough to diagnose the problem.

Intriguing! Well, the only thing I can say is, unlike yourself, attempting to copy any layer with an embedded mask causes Affinity Photo to crash and burn. I does not matter whether it is a newly constructed image or an image I created a month ago, the error is consistent. This never happened with Affinity Photo 1.7.3. I do not think it happened with Affinity Photo 1.8.0. I would like to try on both versions.  Is there a site I can download a copy of earlier versions of Affinity Photo for me to test? Let me know. Thank you.

I found my copy of Affinity Photo Version 1.7.3. I loaded v1.7.3 onto my Mac. So I now have both Version 1.7.3 and Version 1.8.1 available to run, but not concurrently.  I have loaded several of my images with an embedded mask on Version 1.7.3 . I have also created a new test image with a layer with an embedded mask on Version 1.7.3. On Version 1.7.3, I can 'right click' (Cmd C) on the layer with the embedded mask, then select 'Copy' with everything working fine. I can paste the layer in another image, copy it again, paste it, etc. Everything is perfectly fine.

I take any of the same images tested on Version 1.7.3, then open them on Version 1.8.1. I 'right click' on the layer with the embedded mask. As soon as click 'Copy' on Version 1.8.1, Affinity Photo crashes and burns. If I create a new test image with a layer with an embedded mask on Version 1.8.1, then try the operation, 'crash and burn'.

I tried to open an image created on V1.8.1 on V1.7.3, but the system states it contains features from a newer version, so the image will not open.

I do have a very old 3rd party clipboard management app called 'Copied' that I originally installed in April 2017, then migrated the 'Copied' app to my new mac in late December 2019. As noted, 'Copied' does NOT cause any issue with Version 1.7.3. So, I find it hard to believe that the same app could affect Version 1.8.1. However, I am a reasonable guy. Please let me know how this could be the source of the V1.8.1  'crash and burn'. Version 1.7.3 fine, 1.8.1 crash and burn for the exact same operation using the exact same images.

Sincerely, Daniel

Hi again Daniel,

The crash report which you kindly provided tells me that as soon as you have copied your objects onto the clipboard, an external application is requesting a PDF representation of them.

The most likely cause of this is 3rd party clipboard management tools which "watch" the clipboard for changes, then harvest the data from the clipboard in a variety of formats, usually PDF.

I am not suggesting that that fault lies with this 3rd party tool - it almost certainly does not - but if it were temporarily disabled it might allow you to continue to use 1.8 until I get the real issue fixed.

Hope this helps and thanks again for the report.

Andy.

BTW, I have continued to test V1.8.1. In addition to the 'Copy' error, the exact same thing happens when you 'Cut' a portion of the image. Namely, crash and burn. I just lost 30 minutes of work. Even though I have the preferences set to save a recovery file every 30 seconds, Affinity Photo recovers back to the originally image after each 'crash and burn'. Now I have to use File/Save regularly as well.

Unfortunately, there is no way to 'disable' the Copied app. So, I will delete the app to see if the errors (i.e. Copy and Cut) go away.

Sincerely, Dan
